From First Call to Final Cut: What the Municipal Video Production Process Looks Like

By 4 March 2026No Comments

One of the things local government clients appreciate most about working with Distill Media is knowing exactly what to expect at each stage of a project. Government communications teams work to tight timelines, with council approvals and public launch dates that cannot move. We build our process around that reality.

It starts with a discovery conversation. Before we talk about cameras or shooting schedules, we want to understand the goal. Who is the audience? What do you want them to feel or do after watching? Is there a story here that people are not hearing yet? Those questions shape everything that comes next.

Pre-production is where most of the strategic work happens. We can help with concept development, scripting, and storyboarding – or if your team has a strong internal vision, we come in to help execute it. Either way, we do not show up on shoot day without a plan. The more clearly we define the story in advance, the better the footage we capture and the faster the edit comes together.

Filming typically gets underway within two weeks of booking. On location, we handle all the technical elements – lighting, audio, camera work – so your team can focus on the people being filmed, not the production logistics. We move efficiently and respect people’s time on both ends of the camera.

Post-production includes editing, colour, music, graphics, and any voiceover or on-screen text your project requires. You will receive a first draft within approximately 14 days of the shoot, and we work through revisions collaboratively until the final product is exactly what you envisioned. Most projects wrap in well under six weeks from first call to delivery.
